Couching

Couching

Couching is used in many of the Dimensions Needlecrafts designs because it makes a smooth line or curve. Couching works especially well for items such as whiskers or grasses. Couching consists of two main components: the base stitch and the tacking stitches. Below are some steps to help you do Couching.

Step 1
couching-1 Thread your needle with the number of strands listed in the key. These strands will form the base stitch. Come up through the fabric or canvas and lay the base stitch in position as indicated on the chart (there may be printed lines on the fabric to show where these stitches should go, or you may need to “eyeball it” from the chart, as in the case of needlepoint.)
Step 2
couching-2 Using another needle, tack the base stitch in place using one strand of matching thread. Space the tacking stitches approximately 1" apart or where the angle or curve of the base stitch changes.
Step 3
couching-3 When you are finished tacking, take the base stitch down through the fabric and knot it close to the back of the fabric. Trim the excess.
Step 4
couching-4 This shows Couching on a finished piece.
