1. On scrap paper or 1/8" grid paper, draw I (heart) NY, making the letters 1 1/4" high. This will enable you to make five 1/4" high cross stitches for each letter. If you want to be more precise and want to chart the letters as in our model, you can use grid paper and work over 2 squares in each direction for the Xs. Now, using the paper version as a guide for measuring, mark the design with the white chalk pencil onto the mini purse. Simple straight line letters are fine—you should be able to eyeball the placement of the Xs.
2. Insert the foam block inside the mini purse. Using the tomato roving, needle felt the heart.
3. Using 18" lengths of white yarn, stitch Xs to form the letters, making sure you cross the Xs in the same direction every time.
4. Double 3 yards of red yarn to 1 1/2 yards. Crochet a chain stitch for the wristlet loop. Attach by knotting the ends through the zipper pull of the purse.
