  • Heirloom Monogram Lap Quilt

    Designed By Stephanie Gallaher

Creating an elegant lap quilt with a counted cross stitch monogram can be an extraordinary gift for a friend, family member, even as a baby gift for a newborn. Beautiful quilts are readily available if you wish to use one already made and add the monogram and embellishments. Or you might choose your own fabrics to create a quilt from beginning to end. Whichever you choose, the results will be stunning!

1. Select the monogram letter you wish to use and follow the kit’s instructions to create it in counted cross stitch.

2. If you are creating your own quilt, determine the size and pattern you will use along with the color scheme. On our quilt, we used red and gold patterned fabrics that had a tone-on-tone print, and contrasted them with a larger floral print with a dark background as contrast. We then selected a large floral motif from the dark floral print to add as a showy applique in the lower corner. The remaining instructions work from the point of the base quilt being finished.

3. Monogram Panel: Determine how much airspace you want around your monogram letter, add 1/2" all around for the seam allowance and trim the excess. From your coordinating fabric, cut four 12" x 2" strips. Starting with the sides first, align the strips with the monogram fabric leaving 2" extending beyond each end. Sew with a 1/2" seam allowance.

Repeat for the top and bottom; you can choose to miter-sew the corners or lap them as we did. After all sides are attached, fold the outer edges under 1/4". Press with an iron. Position the monogram as desired on the quilt and either sew or hand-applique in place.
