National Scrapbooking Day on May 1st

 Permanent link

Scrapbookers across the US will be celebrating National Scrapbooking Day this Saturday, May 1st. Many will be taking advantage of the energy of this day to participate in crops, retreats, classes, sales, and online events. If ever there were a day to jump in with both feet, this is it!
Sweet Baby Girl
Check your local scrapbooking store to see what events they have planned. It’s a great opportunity to learn about new tools and products, to discover an exciting technique, or to introduce a new dynamic such as Inkadinkado rubber stamps into your scrapbooking.

If you don’t live in the vicinity of a store, there are online activities galore. You might also plan a crop with your own network of friends, spending the day trading ideas and techniques, sharing memories, and being creative with photographs and journaling.
Lion Sleeps productOf course, you can also visit us here at EK Success Brands for some great new products that are just itching to get into your hands and onto your pages. If you’re scrapbooking for a Mother’s Day gift, check out K&Company’s Lion Sleeps Collection which has terrific imagery for both baby boy and girl. Of course, the new mom might enjoy a selection of these products to scrapbook on her own!

There are great new tools to add to your collection, such as the Punch Around the Page sets from Martha Stewart Crafts that give you sensational borders like these:

Not to mention tons of cool new dimensional stickers from Jolee’s covering every subject imaginable! You can easily pop from one EK Success Brands site to another using the “View All Brands” button at the top of each home page, and whether you’re shopping at K&Company, Jolee’s, Inkadinkado, or any of the others, all your selections drop into one shopping cart for one checkout and only one shipping charge! We call it The Mall, and it makes it easy to get all the creative supplies and inspiration you need in one place.

Enjoy celebrating National Scrapbooking Day—we’d love to hear about what you did, so feel free to tell us below.

Happy crafting,
Kristel

Earth Day 2

Greetings Greenies...
I say this completely a-politically and with no reference to doggie chew toys! :) Next week on April 22nd, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. This worldwide observance speaks to the fact that we can and need to do a better job to preserve our planet for our own and future generations. I don’t think anyone can argue with that. Earth Day seeks to educate and motivate people to make more informed choices, and to do what we can to clean up and preserve our precious resources, one person at a time.

It’s a huge initiative, to be sure, and your participation, even in the smallest way, makes a difference. The 2010 Earth Hour, for example, held on March 27th saw hundreds of millions of people in 126 countries taking part in the one-hour lights out, a substantial increase over 2009. WOW! This is a great example of an event getting legs under it when people talk and share ideas.

Earth Day 3 There are many ways to get involved in your own community, including The Great American Cleanup taking place across the US from March 1st to May 31st. Click on this link to find out what’s happening in your neighborhood. My local community is sponsoring recycling events for proper disposal of paints, home chemicals, electronics, and more. The Army Corps of Engineers is hosting a lake cleanup here. Even the simplest act of picking up litter in your neighborhood makes a difference. It’s not just someone else’s job—it’s our planet, so it’s our job.

As crafters, our natural creativity often leads us to repurpose items in a way that is useful or decorative, and that process can be very exciting! The term “scrapbooking” literally means to take scrap bits of this and that and combine them into something meaningful. You can see plenty of projects at Spotted Canary.com where this kind of resourcefulness is demonstrated. Post your own project and tell us how you’ve found a new use for an old item. Also, if you post a project on our Perler Beads website, this month’s free download is a lightswitch cover, a good reminder to turn off the lights!

Earth Day 4

It’s exciting to see organizations like the Girl Scouts with their own initiative on Earth Day and “It’s Your Planet, Love It”. Social awareness needs to include kids so they grow up with positive ideas as tomorrow’s leaders. You can scrapbook your local troop’s Earth Day event with K&Company’s beautifully designed Girl Scout products like these:

I hope you’ll share Earth Day with us, with your family, and with your friends by getting involved. Recycle, repurpose, clean up, plant a tree, teach a child. “The earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth. This we know. Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” ~ Chief Seattle, Divamish Indian, 1855.

If you have a story or an idea about Earth Day, I invite you to add a comment below.

Have a great Earth Day!

There has been a whirlwind of energy among the EK Success Brands sister companies over the past couple of months. Aside from the normal hive activity of creating new products and designs, we have been redesigning our brand websites to give you a better crafting and shopping experience. You’ll notice at the top of each home page, there is a rollover button that says “View All Brands”; this lets you see all the individual companies and brands that have been united under the umbrella of EK Success Brands. It’s a pretty awesome set of players, isn’t it?

Hi, I’m Kristel, and while I am called a “lifer” in product development at Dimensions, I am new to the EK Success Brands web team. I’m learning a lot of new stuff which is exciting, and seeing another side of the business is expanding my experience in layout and design. The EKB (EK Success Brands) web team may be small but we are hard-working and devoted to bringing you creative new content each month with fun and exciting projects and quality products across all brands. We hope that you will bookmark us and return often. Even better, sign up for one or more of our newsletters and receive emails with special offers and promotions.

Disney’s new 3-D movie release of Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp (big fan here, Johnny!) renews excitement in all things Alice. What a great time to tell you we have Disney’s classic Alice in Wonderland art in dimensional sticker sets! They’re great for scrapbooking your trip to Disney, decorating your kids’ rooms, and for embellishing cards and craft projects. Check out all our other Disney products throughout the websites.

There will be other contributors to this blog from around the sister companies, but you’ll see my name here again. We invite you to interact with us here and share your thoughts. So, to get the conversational ball rolling, let me ask you a question: what one product would you recommend to your fellow crafters and why? It could be one of our (or, ahem, someone else’s—eek!) needlework or paint by number designs, scrapbooking tool or paper set, stamp, jewelry making or kids’ craft item, or accessory item. Something that gave you that “aha!” or “wow” moment, that you just have to share...there are so many, right?

Ok, I’ll start. I absolutely ADORE the Inkadinkado Kid Quotes stamps! They seem to go really well with some of the patterned animals images—one of my favorite pairings is the bulldog with the KQ “You know it was a good day if you didn’t hit or bite anyone.”

There’s a lot of grownup wisdom in these simple statements from kids, and I know if I make a card with these, it’ll get a chuckle at the other end. How about you? You can enter your comment below.

I’ll close for now with this delightful excerpt from Alice in Wonderland:
The Mad Hatter: Have I gone mad?
Alice: I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret.
All the best people are.

Cheers!
Kristel
